Suicide Prevention Training (QPR) Funded by LA519

Suicide Prevention Training (QPR) Funded by LA519

The Programme:

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can

learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the

Heimlich Manoeuvre help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in

QPR learn how to recognise the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to

question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

How is QPR like CPR?:

Both are interventions. Much of the world is familiar with CPR — short for

cardiopulmonary resuscitation — an emergency medical intervention created in

1957 by Peter Safar. The process is designed to stabilize people who aren’t

breathing or breathing intermittently and who may be in cardiac arrest until the

person can reach a hospital or other care.

Similarly, QPR is an an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal

persons created in 1995 by Paul Quinnett. An abbreviation for Question,

Persuade and Refer, the intent is also to identify and interrupt the crisis and

direct that person to the proper care.

Both are part of a "Chain of Survival": Both CPR and QPR are part of systems

designed to increase the chance of survival in the event of a crisis.

5km A Day For 19 Days

5km A Day For 19 Days

A life is lost to suicide every 12.8 minutes. The average age of a person who takes their own life is 19. The impact suicide has on the lives of family members, friends, co-workers, and the community is devastating. The loss of human potential is enormous. Over the last year, we have all suffered but some of us just can't talk about our troubles and unfortunately see no other way out. There are so many different organizations out there that will help all we need to do is ask.

On the 1st of December, we will be doing 5k a day (walk or run) for 19 days and we would like as many of you to join us. What we are asking is everyone that takes part to donate €50 or get sponsored by people to the value of €50 and send a screenshot of your 5k. It's not a race so time doesn't matter. We will remind you every day to stick your screenshot up and we will encourage you to do it!!!

All donations will go to Suicide awareness LA519.

Click on our GoFundMe link below to donate.

L.A. Big Breakfast Weekend

Friday 10th September was World Suicide Prevention Day.

The L.A. Big Breakfast took place in recognition of this day and to raise funds for Suicide Prevention Training in our communities. We had great help from local volunteers and businesses and a few well known Monaghan faces in there too including Tommy Bowe and Ryan Sheridan.

Overall €32,287 was raised between the breakfast events and the raffle, which we were absolutely delighted with. It means a lot more suicide prevention training for our local communities.
